Buffalo Bill Cody Signed Hand-Colored Equestrian Photo, Previously Unseen!
SP
A hand-colored photograph of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917) signed by him as: "Yours Truly / Buffalo Bill" in the lower right corner. N.d., n.p. Details of the black and white vintage photograph have been carefully hand-colored, including Cody's fringed leather outfit, the horse's bridle, the sky, another horse's rump, and a Plains Indian wearing a headdress standing in the background. The white horse which Cody is riding may have been Isham, a "flea-bitten nag" from Lincoln, Nebraska gifted to Cody after an auction. The photo surface shows expected wear including isolated wrinkles, and the signature is a little difficult to initially see against the dark background. Matted and framed behind glass. Bearing a former collector's handwritten label recto and pen-inscribed recto. The mat shows toning and minor isolated water stains towards the edges, with negligible surface loss to the frame. Not examined out of the frame. Else very good to near fine. The sight size of the signed photograph is 9.125" x 7.25" while the frame size overall is 12.875" x 11.125' x .625."

Before he was an entrepreneurial showman, Cody served as a Union soldier in the Civil War, Pony Express rider, scout, Indian fighter, and professional hunter. Cody allegedly earned his moniker "Buffalo Bill" by the ease with which he slayed thousands of the beasts of the Plains. Cody was seldom seen without "Lucrezia Borgia," his Springfield Model 1866 rifle. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's real life experiences informed his incredibly popular "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show. This colorful and rollicksome traveling circus featured Cowboys, Indians, Bandits, and other motley characters. Performers like Sitting Bull and Calamity Jane reenacted famous events, staged stunts and tricks, raced on horseback, and circled their Conestoga wagons to the dazzled delight of American and European crowds.
