Hawthorne, Nathaniel (1804-1864) Novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, as U.S. Consul in Liverpool, certifies that he has "sent on board the ship Brother Jonathan Richard Harrison a destitute American Seaman, desirous of returning home."

Partly Printed Document Signed "Nathl Hawthorne" as U.S. Consul, 1 page, 7.5" x 6.75". Liverpool, England, October 20, 1854. Completed in manuscript. Brown paper. The upper portion of a larger sheet, complete in itself. Most of the paper seal of the consular office is affixed at lower left with resulting ripples resembling sun rays. Pictorial patriotic eagle vignette at top center, decorative border at left edge. Minor ink stains. Fine condition.

In full, "I, Nathaniel Hawthorne Consul of the United States of America, for the Port of Liverpool and its dependencies, do certify that I have sent on board the ship Brother Jonathan, J. Tucker Master, Richard Harrison a destitute American Seaman, desirous of returning home, for whose Passage the said Master will be entitled to receive Ten Dollars on arrival in the United States, and this Certificate being endorsed by the Collector of Customs at the Port of arrival, in conformity with the fourth chapter and fourth section of Consular Instructions. His description is annexed. / Age 24 Years / Height 5 ft 6 inches / Complexion Light / Hair Brown / Signature Richard x Harrison" Between the words "His" & "Mark," "x" was penned by Harrison.

"Given under my Hand and Seal of Office at Liverpool this 20th day of October and year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty 54."

In 1853, Nathaniel Hawthorne was appointed U. S. Consul in Liverpool, England, by his old college friend, Franklin Pierce.
