Apollo IX
n.p., ca. 1969
Apollo 9 Flown Photo Map of Florida & North Carolina, Ex. Jim McDivitt
Map
A double-sided photo map, page 41-43, which came directly from the Apollo 9 Landmark Maps & Photos checklist flown aboard the mission by Commander Jim McDivitt. 1p, 7.5" x 10.5", n.p., ca. 1969. Features NASA photo identification numbers "NASA-S-66-63420" and "NASA-S-65-34789" at lower left corner, signifying that the images were taken on various Gemini flights between 1965 and 1966. Each map has a chart printed beneath giving latitude, longitude, elevation, and horizontal uncertainty calculations for each identified location. Exhibits light age toning and gentle wear from handling; scattered pencil marks present to lower left of front page, not affecting overall appearance. A near fine example.

Provenance: From the collection of Jim McDivitt, includes a copy of the original certificate of authenticity and a photograph of McDivitt with the checklist. Together with a Certificate of Authenticity from The Space Collective Ltd.

Apollo 9 was the third human spaceflight in NASA's Apollo program. Flown in low Earth orbit, it was the second crewed Apollo mission that the United States launched via a Saturn V rocket, and was the first flight of the full Apollo spacecraft: the command and service module (CSM) with the Lunar Module (LM). Landmark and photo map plates such as this were intended for an emergency procedure in which the Apollo astronauts could update the spacecraft guidance and navigation computers by inputting precise position information of preselected Earth landmarks. Such maps of candidate landmarks and related data charts were prepared and carried by astronauts in both the Gemini and Apollo programs.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
