Description:

Anne Lindbergh ALS, Providing Comfort & Ruminating on Death

3pp, measuring 5.5" x 8.5", Scotts Cove, dated May 1, 1952. Boldly signed with her full name, "Anne Lindbergh" and addressed to her friend and neighbor, John Oldrin, following the death of his wife. Anne writes words of comfort and thoughts on death after an illness, in part:

"I have just learned - this beautiful Spring morning - of Mrs. Oldrin's death. I know - from my sisters long forewarned death - that no matter how much one may be prepared beforehand and how much one may with one's rational mind feel and know & even be grateful for the release from suffering for the person who has gone - even so - the tearing away of a life one has shared is an amputation - a tearing of oneself in half - almost physical - so it is hard to walk & function alone in new patterns. I want to stretch out my hand to you, though I know of course that you are strong and will be able to meet and carry this as you have so much else - so unbelievably much. I think - what one feels after a long illness - is a rush of memory of the person before - a return of the real and vivid person whom illness to a certain degree separated you from. Heartbreaking as this is, there is a certain comfort in it and I hope you may, after these first terrible days, refined - what St X [Exupéry] calls - 'Le veritable ami mort.'…" Accompanied by the original envelope, hand addressed and at the lower corner is written: "By Hand." The letter has flattened mail folds and lightly toned edges. Boldly signed. The envelope has moderate wear, soiling, and tearing to the edges.

John Oldrin’s first wife, Edna Young Brenchley Oldrin (1881-1952), met Oldrin (b. 1901) which he was employed on her estate, and the couple's marriage in 1932 was a scandal at the time due to the difference in age and social standing. She passed away on April 29, 1952. John would later remarry Virginia Johnson Knowlton (1924-2009) in 1956.
