Description:

Anne Lindbergh ALS "I feel grateful...for all you have given to the community"

2pp of a bifolium, measuring 5.75" x 4", Darien, Connecticut, dated October 20 [30?], 1980. Writen from "Tellina", the Lindbergh's Connecticut waterfront cottage. Signed "Anne" at the conclusion and addressed to John Oldrin. With an additional signature of "A.M. Lindbergh" on the accompanying original envelope, within the return address. The card is "Squirrel in a Hazelnut Tree", a detail from the Flemish tapestry "The Hunt of the Unicorn." Anne writes a "get well" card to Oldrin, mentioning his contributions to the conservation of the area. In full:

"I am so sorry to hear from Elsie Wheeler that you have been ill and in the hospital. She says you are now back at home and I hope that means you feel better. I hope, too, that in these beautiful Autumn days you can convalesce looking - from a chaise-lounge, or a window - at some of the beauty you have helped to preserve in this neighborhood. Every time I walk into your meadows I feel grateful to you and Ginnie for all you have given to the community. I have recently been walking around the meadows with a cane (due to a malfunction – Meniere’s Syndrome – of the center of balance in my ears!) Even with a cane it is still beautiful. But I am afraid my dog ‘Berwick’ chases the squirrels (He never gets one but it gives him exercise!)” As mentioned, the card is accompanied by the original envelope. The card is boldly signed, with just a small amount of bumping to the corners. Tearing at the top and right edges of the envelope. There is a hole through the return address, affecting the "M" of Lindbergh's signature.

John Oldrin (1901-1985) was born in Connecticut and became a banker and civic leader in Darien, Connecticut, where his home was called Round Meadow. He shared Charles Lindbergh's passion for conservation, and he and his wife acquired Scott's Cove Woodland Marsh for the protection of the coastal wetlands. They also donated a portion of Round Meadow to the Dairen Land Trust.
