"I received your letter & I ought to have written you an answer sooner, but I have been absent from home, but hope the Autographs will not arrive too late - I have so often been applied to for them, that it is now rather impossible for me to send them with as little trouble as I was able to do, when I was at first applied too [sic], As I am now often obliged to cut them from Books, but at the same time, it gives me great pleasure, for it assures me that my dear departed Husband still lives in the affection of a very great many, of the people of the United States - Except [sic] dear Sir, the best wishes of your friend…"

Anna Tuthill Symmes Harrison (1775-1864) was the oldest First Lady ever to hold that office, and for the shortest length of time. She was First Lady for precisely one month before Harrison died suddenly from pneumonia in April 1841. Anna, who was ill herself during her husband's first month in office, had stayed behind in Ohio to recover and pack, and consequently never lived in the White House. It was thus with deep feeling that Harrison wrote this note to a friend requesting her husband's autograph. She had eloped with Harrison, then a dashing 22-year-old army officer, in 1795 against her father's wishes. The couple had ten children, five of whom died in young adulthood, during their 45-year-long marriage.
