Andrew Johnson Signed Attractive Military Commission

One page Document Signed by President Andrew Johnson, signed only about 2 weeks after the death of President Lincoln. Signed by Johnson as President in full signature as "Andrew Johnson," 13.5" x 17." Washington, "May 3, 1865." Cosigned by Edwin M. Stanton as Secretary of War. On vellum. Lovely engraving to the top depicting an American Eagle in flight with olive branches and arrows in its Talons, and a lower engraving depicting Military weapons and our Flag. Blue 2.25" saw toothed seal affixed to upper left of document. Hand written notation indicating the recording dated and Volume number upper left corner in red ink. Soft creasing, else near fine.

An ornate Military Commission, appointing Charles H. Crane to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet in the army.

Crane had completed his medical course at Harvard in 1847 and was given the degree of M. D., at the same time receiving the degree of M. A. from Yale.  However his heart was set upon a military career. This military commission is documented such that on January 1, 1865, he was given brevets of lieutenant colonel and colonel, and on March 13 the brevet of brigadier general "for faithful and meritorious service during the War of the Rebellion."

Signed by Johnson just after the assassination of President Lincoln. Johnson is most famous for being elected Vice President with Abraham Lincoln in 1864, succeeding Lincoln after the assassination and then being the first President to be impeached in 1868, but exonerated by one vote in the Senate trial. The charge that was almost convicted of was violating the Tenure of Office Act by firing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton without the approval of Congress.  Johnson claimed the Tenure of Office Act was unconstitutional, and he was right. In many ways Johnson was vindicated by history. Both Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and James Garfield complained strenuously about the Tenure of Office Act and the Act was repealed in 1887 at the urging of then President Grover Cleveland.

Rare to find these without the usual stamped signature.   An attractive Military commission in extraordinary condition having been preserved lying flat within a large oversized book.
