"Dear Sir,

I thank you for your invitation to attend the formal opening of the New Ledger Building, on the 20th instant, and regret that engagements, already formed, will not permit me to be present on an occasion of so much interest. I can only, therefore, tender you my congratulations upon the great success which has been achieved by your ability, energy, and integrity, and, in wishing for the Ledger continued prosperity, express the hope that in the discrimination of sound principles and useful knowledge, its influence for good may remain unabated.

I am, Sir,

Very respectfully and truly yours,

Andrew Johnson".

George W. Childs (1829-1894) had purchased the struggling Philadelphia Public Ledger in 1864. After implementing a vigorous marketing campaign, newspaper circulation boomed and the paper moved to a larger property at Sixth and Chestnut Streets in downtown Philadelphia to meet its growing needs. The six-story building, complete with editorial rooms, printing rooms, press rooms, and storefront space, was inaugurated on June 20, 1867. Marketing genius Childs made sure to reproduce this congratulatory letter of Johnson's in an 1868 souvenir volume commemorating the inauguration of the building!
