Description:

Jackson Andrew 1767 - 1845

Andrew Jackson demands payment for a slave before the new owner "exercise[s] any acts of ownership over him" in a letter carried by that slave.

Manuscript letter signed "Andrew Jackson" by a secretarial hand, 2 pages, 7" x 9", Miltons Bluff, Tennessee, December 25, 1817. To James Jackson, Jr. of Nashville concerning the planned purchase of a slave named "Dick" who was also the carrier of the letter! Marginal wear, fold separations mended with paper tape, minor losses affecting text. Good condition.

The letter reads in full: "Sir. Knowing that Mr. James Jackson, senr will not be in Nashville & understanding that the former master of the bearer Dick is about to make sale of him, you will please cause it to be understood that he cannot, nay shall not, exercise any acts of ownership over him, before the money paid him is actually paid to me or my agent and that I hold a firm Bill of Sale for him. I have given Dick a pass until Sunday eveng. when he is to return. If you see his former owner please say to him that I am about to remove some of my hands to Miltons Bluff & if he intends to redeem the negro he had better do it now, and if he is in want I will add to the sum paid what I think a fair price for a fellow of his age & qualities..." With address transmittal leaf addressed to "Mr. James Jackson Junr of the house of Jas Jakcson & Co Nashville. pr, Dick".

A superb piece concerning Andrew Jackson and slavery. Within a month, Andrew Jackson would be leading 1,000 men to Florida to fight the First Seminole War.
