Al Capone
Miami, FL, ca. 1930s
Al Capone Exits Miami Police Division, Retrieved from Disposal by Miami Officer!
Photograph

Original black and white photograph, ca. 1930s, depicting the infamous gangster Al Capone flanked by law enforcement officials as he exits a building marked "POLICE DIVISION," in Miami, Florida. The image captures Capone in his trademark three-piece suit and white Panama hat, surrounded by men in formal hats and suits, as well as uniformed officers. The photograph is printed on period photo paper with light aging and faint toning to the verso, consistent with materials from the era. The back of the photo is blank with no inscriptions.

From the estate of Gordon Pouliot (1927–2004), a respected Motorcycle Police and Patrol Officer in Southern Florida from the 1950s to the 1970s. According to the estate, Pouliot preserved this photograph after retrieving it from possible disposal during his law enforcement career and later curated a modest historical collection during his travels.

Al Capone was arrested and detained multiple times during the early 1930s while living in Miami, often under vagrancy or suspicion-based charges rather than for specific criminal acts. These charges were part of a broader campaign by local authorities to push Capone out of Florida, where his presence was seen as a threat to the city's image and growing tourism industry. His most notable arrest came in May 1930 when he was taken into custody by Miami Beach police and charged with vagrancy and being a suspicious character. Although he was fined $1,000 and ordered to leave the city, Capone fought the charges in court and successfully had the conviction overturned on appeal. During this period, he resided at his luxurious Palm Island estate in Biscayne Bay, drawing constant attention from law enforcement and the press. Miami officials, including Sheriff David Coleman and Police Chief Leslie Quigg, remained determined to expel him, despite his declining health due to neurosyphilis. Even as his mental and physical condition deteriorated, Capone's reputation as a symbol of the Prohibition-era underworld ensured that every encounter with law enforcement was highly publicized and politically charged.
