LS
A pair of manuscript letters signed by Rear Admiral Samuel F. Du Pont written while commanding the USS WABASH in Port Royal, South Carolina, each regarding transfers to James H. Strong, commanding the USS FLAG. Both are in very good condition, with full details given below.

1. A manuscript letter signed, one page, 8" x 11.75", Port Royal, August 14, 1862. Du Pont requests that Strong "…transfer to the Massachusetts for passage to the North, Lewis Willard Boatswain mate and Thos. H. Williams, Marine, both of whom are reported by you as unfit for duty on account of sickness."

2. A manuscript letter signed, one page, 7.75" x 9.75", Port Royal, March 3, 1863. Du Pont requests Strong to "transfer to the U.S.S. 'Vermont' Private Marine, William Walker, whose time will expire on the 15th March 1863…".

Samuel F. Du Pont (1803-1865) was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and a member of the prominent Du Pont family. He served in both the Mexican-American War and Civil War with distinction, playing key roles in blockade operations. His reputation was tarnished, however, when he was controversially blamed by Gideon Welles for the failed attack on Charleston in April 1863.

James Hooker Strong (1814-1882) was a rear admiral in the Union Navy who commanded the MOHAWK and FLAG in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron at the start of the war, and best remembered and commended for being the first to ram the CSA ironclad TENNESSEE.
