Admiral Richard Howe ALS re: "provision for the wounded & disabled Flag Officers"
ALS

An autograph letter from Admiral of the Fleet Richard Howe to Sir Thomas Pasley. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Grafton Street [London], January 13, 1795. Signed "Howe" at conclusion, he discusses new government provisions made for wounded naval officers, which would include Pasley himself, who lost his leg in 1794. Holograph integral address leaf present on verso, with paper loss from seal tearing and structural repair along back fold. Exhibits uneven toning and scattered edge soiling throughout, with areas of faintly visible repair to front letter folds. Together with a 6.75" x 10.5" engraving of Howe. Very good overall with interesting military contents.

In part:

"I have great pleasure admiral of being able to acquaint you, that is in the contemplation of government to make an acceptable provision for the wounded & disabled Flag Officers. This information I had opportunity of acquiring by being in company lately with Mr. _ who named the subject to me; I therefore don't see any objection to the communication of it…."

Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe (1726-1799) was a Royal Navy officer and politician best known for his service during the American Revolutionary War, when he acted as a naval commander and peace commissioner. Having previously served in the War of the Austrian Succession, he gained a reputation for his role in amphibious operations against the French coast as part of Britain's policy of naval descents during the Seven Years' War. Howe also took part, as a captain, in the decisive British naval victory at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in November 1759.

Sir Thomas Pasley, 1st Baronet (1734-1808) was a decorated Royal Navy officer who served in the Seven Years' War, American Revolutionary War and French Revolutionary Wars. It was during the latter service that he was awarded his baronetcy, after losing a leg at the Glorious First of June in 1794.
