Description:

John Jay
Boston, MA, August 13, 1795
Anti-Federalist Sentiments on the Recently Ratified Jay's Treaty as Published in the Independent Chronicle
Newspaper

Independent Chronicle and Universal Advertiser, August 13, 1795. Boston: Adams and Larkin. 4pp., 12" x 20.25". Almost three complete pages of notices and coverage of town meetings voicing negative public opinion on Jay's Treaty, recently ratified by the Senate on June 24, 1795. Disbound, with near complete separation and dampstaining along integral fold. Age toning, and irregular margins affecting some text, but paper remains supple.

Published by Adams & Larkin during the 1790s, the Independent Chronicle was firmly aligned with the Democratic-Republican (Jeffersonian) party. More than half of the front page and first column of page two contains a letter signed, "A Constitutionalist" criticizing the disadvantages of the Treaty to the United States stating that the terms meant to have reciprocity were "merely nominal and delusive."

Page two contains the proceedings of a General Meeting of the Citizens of Trenton, New Jersey held on August 4, 1795 at which the Treaty was read aloud and a series of resolutions passed voicing objections. The second resolution passed "without a dissenting voice" recorded public opinion that the treaty was "degrading to the national honor, dangerous to the public interest, and destructive to the agricultural and commercial views of the United States."

Jay's Treaty was the first major international treaty to be passed under the Constitution. With it, George Washington established protocol making the president chief architect of foreign policy. He defended the constitutional role of the Senate in ratification and asserted executive privilege against the Democratic-Republican majority House. Much more great content recording opposition to the Treaty.
