Lincoln Abraham

Abraham Lincoln Collector Frederick H. Meserve ALS: "I am happy to think they will read what you have written concerning the Meserve Collection and my fortunate association with Lincoln scholars of the past sixty years"

1p ALS on "Frederick H. Meserve, 148 East 78th Street, New York 21, N.Y." letterhead inscribed overall and signed by Lincoln collector Frederick H. Meserve as "Frederick Hill Meserve" at bottom. Written in New York City on February 12, 1960. The watermarked cream paper is in near fine condition, with expected light paper folds and a few isolated stains, 8.5" x 11".

Frederick H. Meserve (1865-1962), a world-renown collector of Lincoln and Civil War era photography, ephemera, maps, and books, wrote this thank you note to Harry J. Taylor, President of the New York Civil War Round Table, on President Lincoln's 151st birthday.

The 95-year-old collector wrote: "I find it hard to put into words how touched and really overcome I am on reading the too generous words of the Placque [sic presented to me this February 12 1960 by the Civil War Round Table of New York. I shall place this beautifully illuminated tribute on the desk in my Lincoln Library where it will give me constant pleasure. I know it will be valued by my children's children. I am happy to think they will read what you have written concerning the Meserve Collection and my fortunate association with Lincoln scholars of the past sixty years. With heartfelt gratitude I am Faithfully yours, Frederick Hill Meserve."

Frederick H. Meserve began collecting Lincolniana in 1897, with the intention of illustrating his father's Civil War diary. Meserve continued collecting over the next sixty years, eventually amassing 200,000 pieces including some previously "lost" or unknown images of Lincoln. Meserve's collection was so esteemed for its completeness that he essentially became the custodian of "Lincoln's image." Meserve was approached by medal and currency engravers, as well as by the sculptors of Lincoln's Memorial Monument, for direct access to his presidential photographs. In 2015, the Meserve-Kunhardt Collection was acquired by the Yale Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library in New Haven, Connecticut.
