Description:

Abraham Lincoln Signed & Endorsed With an 8-LINE Autograph! Handsomely Framed.

Two page autograph endorsement signed. Dated "Washington November 4, 1861". Two lined sheets, each written on both sides, measuring 8" x 9.75". Handsomely framed to a completed size of 28" x 18"

An exceptional EIGHT-line 1861 autograph endorsement, penned entirely in the hand of Lincoln and signed by him as President, recommending that an officer be restored to service, signed along with original soldier's letters and governor's letter, all in fine condition.

This fine piece includes two autograph documents: the first has on one side a draft of a "Special Order, " dated November 4, 1861 in Washington, D.C., which allows Major William Newby of the 6th Regiment of the New York State Volunteers to withdraw his resignation and return to duty. This special order is unsigned. On the other side of this sheet is a lengthy eight-line endorsement written by President Lincoln that reads:

Respectfully submitted to the War Department, with the hope that Major Newby may be restored, provided he is known to be loyal, and his restoration will do injustice to no other officer - A.Lincoln . Nov 4, 1861". Immediately beneath Lincoln's endorsement is the autograph note from the War Department, dated the same day, reading "The Resignation having been accepted -  Mr. Newby cannot be restored except by reappointment from the Governor of New York."

The second document is an autograph letter, also dated Nov. 4th, 1861, sent by William Newby to "His Excellency Edwin D. Morgan, Governor of the State of New York" explaining the health concerns which forced him to resign his position as Major, and requesting, now that his health has returned, to be reappointed to his former position. Notes as to the content of the letter are on the verso; a blue pencil note indicates that Mr. Newby's request was approved (verso facsimile attached to the back of the piece). Lincoln's unusually long endorsement note is very clearly written and signed. It is quite unusual to see such an endorsement on a full sheet with accompanying materials.

All pieces in unusually fine condition and with stunning presentation!
