Description:

Lincoln Abraham

Late 19th century bronzed bas relief plaque of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln contained in a simple mahogany finished frame measuring 11.375" x 16" overall. The president is depicted in profile facing right, with "Lincoln" appearing below bust in raised Art Nouveau style lettering. Plaque with warm brown patina. In very good to near fine condition, with a few isolated areas of verdigris and surface corrosion, found mostly along the right edge. Item previously offered at Christie's, bearing lot sticker in upper left corner of frame and tag at back. Not examined out of slightly worn frame.

In this romanticized portrait of the assassinated president, Lincoln appears noble and dignified, his profile suggesting both strength and purpose. While Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) may have championed the Republican Party, freed the slaves, and salvaged the Union, the American public generally conceded that he was not handsome. In fact, Lincoln’s homeliness was one of his most endearing attributes, further fostering the idea that the former rail-splitter born in a log cabin was one of the people. Yet in the years after his death, Lincoln was ennobled and enshrined as one of America's finest hero-presidents; part of that cultural shift is demonstrated here.
