This eclectic archive includes letters and a variety of other documents, most related to the state of Maryland, especially Cecil County in the northeastern corner of the state on the borders of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Documents include bills of sale, receipts, certifications of marriage, accounts, deeds, indentures, releases, bonds, wills, and correspondence from a variety of individuals.

' Elisabeth Death, Manuscript Document Signed with a Mark, Release of George Johnson, n.d., Cecil County, Maryland. 1 p., 7.25" x 8.75".
"Know all men by these Presents that I Elisabeth Death of Cecil County and province of Maryland for an in consideration of one pound tenn shilling current money of Maryland to me in Hand paid by George Johnson of the said County and province Black Smith Do Realeas Exonarate and for Ever aquit the said George Johnson from having any Demands Clames or Clames what soever against the said George Johnson his heirs Executors or administrators upon the account of a Base Born Child which I the said Elisabeth Death sware to the said George Johnson and had him to justice on the tenth Day of February Seventeen hundred fifty and three allow myself to have received full Satisfaction from the beginning of the world to this present Date and for ever hear after to be fully satisfied for the same and witness my hand and seal this 7th Day January 1755."

"In case my name should be set aside at the Ballot to day & in case it should therefore be called over either on Thursday or Tuesday next I shall be much obliged to you if you will apply for me for leave of absence for 14 days to attend the assizes where I am obliged to be present on most urgent business."

' William Sands et al., Manuscript Document Signed, Petition to Keep a Tavern, May 19, 1816, Cumberland County, New Jersey. 1 p., 8.125" x 13.5".
"To the Justices of the court of general Quarter Sessions of the peace in and for the County of Cumberland New Jersey to be holden at Bridgetown on the First Tuesday in June in the year of our Lord eighteen Hundred and sixteen.
"The Subscriber petitions the Court to grant him license to Keep an Inn or tavern in Port Elizabeth near Eagle Glass Manufactury (in the House where he now lives)

"We the subscribers freeholders & Inhabitants of the county aforesaid do hereby recommend Mr William Sands as a suitable person to keep an Inn or Tavern being a person of good repute for honesty and temperance having two spare feather Beds more than are necessary for his family's use and being well provided House room stabling & provender.

' Manuscript Document, Copy of the Last Will and Testament of George Johnson, July 7, 1776, Cecil County, Maryland. 2 pp., 8" x 13".

' Charles [Thomson?] Jones, Autograph Letter Signed, to Major General Robert Patterson, ca. 1846-1861. 2 pp., 5" x 7".
"I am in receipt of General order No. 21 from the Head Quarters of the Military Department of Washington directing the mustering into the service of the United States the company of which I am the Captain.
"I would respectfully ask whether the Government will furnish horses for the volunteers or require each volunteer to furnish his own horse also whether the government will furnish horse equipment.
"I would further state that a large number of my company are volunteers who have recently joined the company and require some drilling before they would be fitted for active service I have employed instructors who have been in the Dragoon service of the United States and will have them ready as soon as possible."

Robert Patterson (1792-1881) was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1799. He volunteered for the War of 1812 and rose from the rank of captain to colonel in the Pennsylvania Militia. He was commissioned a major general of volunteers at the outbreak of the Mexican War and commanded the 2nd Division in the Army of Occupation. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was again appointed major general of Pennsylvania volunteers and commanded the Department of Pennsylvania. and the Army of the Shenandoah.

' C. Hagen, Autograph Letter Signed, to William Ross, January 8, 1852, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 1 p., 7.75" x 9.875".
"The dividends for the past two years have been nine per cent per annum viz $2.50 per share in May and $2 in November of each year amounting to $253 per annum which in my opinion ought to make Miss Davis quite comfortable."

' John Hancock, The North and the South. / The Crisis Before Us. / For Reading and Reflecting Men. Printed Document, 1856. 8 pp., 5.5" x 9". Edge tears with some loss of text.
"The following pages are made up from an article which was published in the NEW YORK HERALD of September 24, 1856. The Herald is distinguished for the zeal and energy with which it supports the election of Colonel Fremont. The facts and reasoning in the article are worthy of the thoughtful attention and study of every voter who wishes to exercise his suffrage for the public good."
