Description:

3 Jimmy Carter Sigs: Rare 2x Signed Pres. TLS Re: Air Force One Trip, Plus Bonus Signed Receipt!

The lot consists of two items signed by 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter (born 1924): a typed letter twice signed by Carter; and an early warehouse receipt signed by Carter, making a total of three signatures.

Including:

1. A 1p typed letter twice signed by Carter, the first time as "Jimmy" at center; and the second time as "J" in the postscript, which Carter has also inscribed as "P.S. I'm glad Joy [Joy Dirksen Baker (d. 1993), Baker's first wife] is better -." May 22, 1978. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked stationery with a blind-embossed presidential seal at top and "The White House / Washington" letterhead. A flattened paper fold at center, else near pristine. 6.75" x 8.875."

President Carter wrote U.S. Senator from Tennessee Howard Baker (1925-2014), in part: "I was pleased that you and Joy were able to return from Tennessee to Washington today with me on Air Force One. I think the trip went well, and appreciate your efforts to insure its success'"

Carter had taken a brief trip to the Southern United States in late May, arriving in Plains, Georgia on May 21, 1978 and returning to Washington, D.C. the next day after spending the day in eastern Tennessee. He delivered two addresses on May 22: a speech in front of employees of the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, Tennessee; and remarks before the scientific community at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Headquarters (Oak Ridge, Tennessee).

2. A "Carter's Bonded Warehouse" "original negotiable / warehouse receipt / for one bale of cotton," signed by proprietor Jimmy Carter as "James E. Carter Jr." on the signature line. The receipt, #1512, was dated October 3, 1963 and was issued to 'J.D. + G.T. Chappell" acknowledging receipt of a 521 lb. bale of cotton in jute bagging. Bearing the usual clerical hand-stamps, perforations, etc. 7.375" x 3.25."

This 1963 receipt dates from future president Jimmy Carter's days as a businessman and peanut farmer on his family's farm in southwestern Georgia. During the decade that he managed the business, Carter struggled to modernize and expand its infrastructure in drought conditions. Carter transitioned from agriculture to politics in 1963, when he successfully ran for the Georgia Senate. Then came his election as 76th Governor of Georgia and finally the White House.
