Description:

(2) Mikhail Baryshnikov Publicity Photos by Martha Swope

Two publicity photographs showing dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov during his time at the New York City Ballet, captured by notable theater photographer Martha Swope. Each measuring 8.5" x 10", ca. 1978-79, New York, NY.  The pair offers an interesting look into Baryshnikov's diverse skillset and ability to mold himself into a variety of characters: the first depicts a powerful mid-air leap from his 1978 performance of Prodigal Son, while the second shows a more relaxed cou de pied in Fancy-Free (1979). Both feature Swope's backstamp, captioned with Baryshnikov's name as well as that of the NYC Ballet, on verso. Exhibits moderate creasing and areas of isolated surface indentations; otherwise very good.

Mikhail Baryshnikov (b. 1948) is a Latvian-American dancer, choreographer, and actor who became one of the leading male classical dancers between the 1970s-1980s. Despite showing immense talent from an early age, at 5'6" Baryshnikov was often given secondary roles during his early career in Soviet Russia. After defecting to Canada in 1974, he quickly rose to prominence as principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre, where he stayed until 1978 to join the New York City Ballet. Upon his return to the ABT in 1980, Baryshnikov would assume the role of artistic director and has since been the recipient of numerous achievement awards including the Prix Benois de la Danse in 2003.

Martha Swope (1928-2017) began her photography career in 1957 when notable theater director Jerome Robbins asked her to capture rehearsals of West Side Story. Soon afterward, Lincoln Kirstein hired her as the first official photographer for the New York City Ballet, documenting over 800 productions in her lifetime.
