Description:

1st Ed., 1st Printing of "Gone With the Wind", Beautifully Signed

A first edition, first issue of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936), featuring "Published May 1936" on the copyright page of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth, housed within a protective 7.25" x 10" fabric case. Boldly signed by Margret Mitchell on the front free endpaper. The first edition, first printing of GWTW numbered only 10,000 copies, and they bore an incorrect release date of May, 1936. These inaccurate first printings, and corrected second printing of 25,000 copies, were both actually released to the American public in June 1936. First state dust jacket, with $3.00 on front flap and “Gone With The Wind” appearing as the second title in the second column of the “Macmillan Spring Novels” advertisement on verso. Exhibits varying degrees of soiling, foxing, and expected wear to cover. Sound binding. Boldly signed. Some areas of wear, dampstaining, mold, and a strong odor to dustjacket. Else, fine condition.

Margaret Mitchell's epic novel of love and war won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and is said to be the fastest-selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day). The novel's release, originally scheduled for May, was delayed until June pending the Book of the Month Club schedule. Before a decision had been finalized, 10,000 copies had been printed with the erroneous May release notice, which can be seen in this copy. The book would go on to become the basis for the 1939 film starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. "Gone with the Wind" (1939) is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and ranks No.6 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 American films. In 1989, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
