Description:

A.A. Milne & His Wife Respond to Invitations, Mention Christopher Robin

A pair of autograph letters signed from author A.A. Milne and his wife, Daphne, with one mentioning their son, Christopher Robin. Both measure 5.5" x 7.5" and were written from Chelsea, England to a Mr. Wilson. The first, signed "A:A: Milne" is dated June 27, n.y. [ca. 1930]. He responds to an invitation, stating that "unfortunately both my wife and I are engaged" and states Christopher Robin is at boarding school. The second letter, signed "Daphne Milne" is dated February 26, n.y. and kindly accepts an invitation to a dinner held for the National Book Trade the following month. Both have flattened mail folds and minor corner creasing. Edge toning and foxing throughout. There is mounting tape residue at the top of Daphne's letter. Both boldly signed.

The letters read in full:
ALS "A:A: Milne", June 27: "Whether my secretary of yours has made some mistake about my reply to your kind invitation for tomorrow I do not know, but unfortunately both my wife and I are engaged. As for Christopher Robin, he is away at boarding school, and the most he can hope for is to be present at my own centenary."
ALS "Daphne Milne", February 26: "My husband asks me to write and say that he thanks you very much for your invitation, and we shall both be delighted to come to the dinner of the National Book Trade on Monday March 18th."

Beloved children's book author A.A. Milne (1882-1956) is best known for his incredibly popular children's series featuring the anthropomorphic Winnie-the-Pooh in the 1920s. "Winnie-the-Pooh" (1926) and "The House at Pooh Corner" (1928) were story collections exploring the friendship between the animal inhabitants of Hundred Acre Wood, and Christopher Robin, a character inspired by Milne's son. Christopher Robin started boarding school in May 1930 at Boxgrove School, and it was then that he began his "love-hate relationship" with his fictional counterpart due to the bullying he received by his schoolmates.
