1920 Antwerp Summer Olympics Bronze Medal, 1/400
Medal

A bronze medal, one of only 400 produced for winning athletes of the 1920 Summer Olympics (Games of the VII Olympiad) held at Antwerp, Belgium. Ca. 1920. [Brussels, Belgium.] The medal designed by Josuë Dupon was produced by Hoosemans, the preeminent Brussels jeweler and goldsmithing firm. The medal obverse depicts a bas relief of a nude male athlete holding a palm leaf and laurel wreath crown, and is engraved "Josuë Dupon" along the bottom rim. The reverse depicts a bas relief of Antwerp city landmarks, such as the port, cathedral, and fountain relating to the Silvius Brabo foundation legend. With a rich, warm patina. Expected wear including isolated verdigris, else very good to near fine. The medal measures 60mm or 2.375" diameter and weighs approximately 80 grams.

The medal is housed in its original burgundy leather hinged case, the top lid gilt-stamped "3me Prix / VIIIe Olympiade / Anvers 1920." The case opens to reveal an ivory-colored silk cushion at top printed: "Hoosemans Joaillier- Orfevre, De L.L. M.M. Le Roi et La Reine Des Belges Bruxelles." The medal rests snugly into a fitted black plush bed at bottom. The right top and bottom edges of the case are slightly damaged. Expected surface wear including scattered loss, scuffs, and minor tarnish to the gilded lettering. Else very good. 3.25" x 3.25" x .75."

The 1920 Summer Olympics convened in Antwerp between April and September 1920. The first Olympics after World War I, some nations were punitively prevented from competing, and post-revolutionary Soviet Russia declined to attend. Ultimately, 29 nations participated by sending more than 2,600 athletes, who competed in 150+ events in 28 disciplines over the course of the games. The United States won the majority of the gold medals and the overall medal count.
