Description:

1860 Stonewall Jackson Signed VMI Diploma, Awarded to Cadet Baltzell

A diploma issued to Cadet J.P. Baltzell of Washington County upon his graduation from the Virginia Military Institute, signed by Stonewall Jackson. 1p of vellum, measuring 15.75" x 19.75", Lexington, Virginia, dated July 4, 1860. Signed by then-professor Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson as "T.J. Jackson Prof. Nat. & Exp. Phil. &c.", as well as by additional faculty and board members, and the Governor of Virginia. Decorated with military vignettes. With a light blue-green ribbon affixed at the top right side with a blue seal. Clean cuts at the top and bottom margins where the ribbon might have been attached. The diploma was previously rolled and has flattened folds and creasing. Light edge toning and soiling. Some wear and tearing to the ribbon. Boldly signed by Jackson and others. Overall very good.

Thomas J. Jackson (1824-1863) was hired to teach at the Virginia Military Institute in 1851, taking the newly created position of Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, or Physics, and Instructor of Artillery. Jackson was not a popular teacher and in 1856, a group of alumni even tried to have Jackson removed. James Peter Baltzell (c. 1830-1868) was a native of Texas and enlisted as a Captain in the Confederate Army. He was later appointed Provost Marshal of the Confederate Army in 1863.
