Description:

[Stonewall Jackson] NY P.O.W. Captured by Jackson's Army 2 Days Before Battle of 2nd Bull Run

A 2pp document signed by Civil War veteran George Hudson, Jr. of Brooklyn, New York, as "George Hudson Jr." at bottom verso. April 1866, n.p. but presumably New York City. The partly printed and partly manuscript document is matted behind plastic wrap, with a small cut-out revealing part of the back panel verso. Expected wear including light toning, folds, and isolated chipped and darkened edges. A sticker from "Weiss Auctions" is located at the top. Else near fine. Each page of the document measures 8.375" x 14" while the mat overall measures 17.625" x 14.625."

Data was collected by the Bureau of Military Record, Office of War Prisoners' Division in order to "correspond with Officers and Soldiers of the State of New York, who have been prisoners of war at any period during the Rebellion, and to request of them details of their personal experience, as material for a future History…"

George Hudson, Jr. was captured by Confederate forces under Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) at Manassas Station, Virginia on August 26, 1862, just two days prior to the Battle of Second Bull Run (August 28-August 30, 1862.) The National Park Service's Soldiers and Sailors Database lists a George Hudson, Jr. as having joined the 84th Regiment of New York Infantry, Company C, as a Corporal; this very well may be our prisoner-of-war.

Hudson, Jr. recounted that he and approximately 40 other Union prisoners including 7 officers were captured after a night attack "by a large force under Stonewall Jackson at Manassas Station Va Aug 26th 1862, Taken to Libby Prison confined Six days." Old Libby, a notorious Confederate prison in Richmond, Virginia, was topped only by Georgia's Andersonville Prison in terms of high Union prisoner mortality rates. The prison, which was converted from a food warehouse on the banks of the James River, was open to the outside elements. Prisoners complained of malnutrition, over-crowding, lack of sanitation, and rampant disease. Hudson, Jr. complained of a lack of doctors and medicine, as well as mistreatment at the hands of "impertanant [sic] and brutal" guards.

The 84th Regiment of New York Infantry was attached to General John Pope's Army of Virginia, which faced off against Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, and Stonewall Jackson in the weeks preceding the Battle of Second Bull Run. Jackson's forces completed a 55-mile march and launched a surprise sunset and evening attack on Union forces protecting Pope's supplies at Briscoe Station and Manassas Station. The ensuing battle two days later was a Union rout.
