Description:

1855 Harvard Yearbook Incl. H.W. Longfellow, A. Agassiz, T. Lyman, & More!

An 1855 Class of Harvard yearbook belonging to George Carleton Sawyer. Quarto, Massachusetts, circa 1855. With 101 mounted rare salt print photographs, of which 75 have been signed, bound between blank leaves. 19 of the photographs are of Harvard College faculty members, while the remaining are students who were members of the Class of 1855. This album was the first yearbook produced with paper print photographs. Fourteen of the faculty members have signed the page beneath their portrait, while 76 students have signed their pages. These include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his son William P. P. Longfellow, Alexander Agassiz, Theodore Lyman, Jared Sparks, Phillips Brooks, and many more. A great piece of history for those interested in Harvard University and 19th-century Massachusetts. Bound in black leather with gilt lettering on the front. Bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The album has chipping, scratching, and wear to the covers and spine. Bumped corners. Minor toning and soiling throughout internal pages. Photographs are in very good condition with bold signatures. Soundly bound.

Alexander Emmanuel Rodolphe Agassiz (1835-1910) was an American scientist and engineer, whose father Louis Agassiz founded Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology. After graduating, Alexander worked as an assistant in the United States Coast Survey and became a specialist in marine ichthyology. And, up until the summer of 1866, he worked as assistant curator in the museum of natural history that his father founded.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet, most famously known for his work entitled "Paul Revere's Ride" and "Evangeline". He taught at both Bowdoin College and Harvard College before retiring from teaching in 1854 to focus on writing.

Jared Sparks (1789-1866) was an American historian, educator, and Unitarian minister who served as President of Harvard College from 1849 to 1853.

Theodore Lyman III (1833-1897) was a natural scientist, military staff officer during the American Civil War, and United States Representative from Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard in 1855 near the top of his class.

Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) was an American Episcopal clergyman and author, long the Rector of Boston's Trinity Church and briefly Bishop of Massachusetts. He wrote the lyrics of the Christmas hymn, "O Little Town of Bethlehem".
