U.S. Grant Appointee O.H. Ross Archive, Featuring Frederick D. Grant ALS

An archive of documents addressed and/or relating to U.S. Grant appointee Captain Orlando H. Ross, including one ALS addressed to Mrs. Ross from U.S. Grant's oldest son Frederick Dent Grant, a copy of an appointment and related letter from the War Department naming Ross mail agent for an area of Ohio, and one biographical page detailing his military history, totaling 5 pieces in all with most having retained their original postage. Varying degrees of toning, soiling, and ink smudging throughout. Overall, very good condition. Please accompanying photos for further content information.

The lot includes:

1.) Frederick Dent Grant ALS w/ original postage addressed to "Mrs. O.H. Ross", 4pp on bifolium, dated October 29, 1894, New York. A letter answering the questions of Mrs. Ross regarding her husband's military career, notably whether he was enlisted in the 21st Illinois Infantry led by U.S. Grant. Reads in part: "Just before the 21st Illinois started from Springfield, July 3rd, 1861, Mr. Ross arrived there with a horse, for my father, Mr. Ross accompanied the 21st Regiment across the state of Illinois and was with the Regiment when it entered the state of Missouri…". Includes a separate page headed "Questions and Answers" regarding Ross' station in the army. 5" x 8".

2.) Copy of Special Order and accompanying letter from War Department's publication office of war records, dated July 27, 1883, Washington, D.C. Two handwritten documents, the first is a copy of Special Order no. 185 originally dated September 5, 1862 naming O.H. Ross military mail agent for a designated section of the U.S. military railroad and the second being a letter from the War Department addressed to Ross referring to Special Order no. 185 in stating "…I will give you a certified copy. This is requested because this order as recorded in General Grant's order book does not contain the paragraphs in your copy.". 7.75" x 12.25" and 7.75" x 9.5".

3.) Handwritten page containing biographical information on Ross' military history. Begins: "Enlisted 27 June 1861 in 21st Ill Vols; Co C. as a private…". 4.75" x 8".

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
