1773 Beverley Robinson Signed Indenture for Parcel of Philipse Patent, Rare!

An indenture signed by Beverley Robinson for a large plot of land in Dutchess County, New York. 1p, measuring 19" x 23.25", dated November 27, 1773. Signed "Bev: Robinson" and sealed at the bottom. With flattened folds and small holes and separations which have been repaired with archival tape on the verso. Uneven, moderate toning throughout, with minor ink burn and light soiling. Boldly signed. We have been unable to find such an indenture available on the market since 1945!  A fantastic item for any colonial New York enthusiast.

The indenture is between Robinson and Samuel Towner for a tract of Land, Lot No. 7, containing 269 acres. The land was a part and parcel of the Philipse Patent, located in what is now Putnam County. The land was acquired for Towner (27), his wife Mary (24), and their daughter (5). The Towners were to pay a yearly rental rate of 27 ounces of silver for the first ten years, with an additional six ounces added every following ten. The couple was also directed to plant an orchard of approximately 300 apple and other fruit trees. The indenture has been signed by John Terrill and Malcom Morison as witnesses at the conclusion.

Beverley Robinson (1721-1792) was born in Virginia and became one of the wealthiest colonists in New York, through his marriage to Susanna Philipse. Despite his opposition to measures taken by the British government, he remained a Loyalist during the American Revolution and formed the Loyal American Regiment, along with working with the British spy network that was responsible for switching the allegiances of General Benedict Arnold. At the time Arnold was discovered, both he and George Washington had been using Robinson's confiscated house as a headquarters. Robinson was even called as a character witness at the trial of Major John André, as he had previously spoken with Washington on the subject of André's release as he and Washington had previously been close friends. In 1779, the Philipse lands and property were seized by New York authorities and auctioned off. Robinson and his family ultimately returned to England after the war ended.
