Archive

A collection of ten partial printed military commissions for the Virginia Militia, which include appointments in the 3rd Artillery and 148th Infantry. Each measures approximately 9.75" x 8", Richmond, VA, ranging in date from 1842 to 1853. Most notably, an appointment signed by John B. Floyd (1806-1863), who would later be a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Also includes, Governors James McDowell (1795-1851) and Joseph Johnson (1785-1877), plus several other Lieutenant Governors of the period. Secretarial docketing present on verso throughout. Full paper seals maintained. Exhibits varying degrees of age toning, soiling, and scattered dampstaining. Areas of minor tearing and pin holes present. Expected creases and folds. Overall, very good.

The lot includes, in chronological order:

- April 18, 1842 commission of Samuel B. McNear as Captain in the 3rd Regiment of Artillery, 10th Brigade, signed by Lieutenant Governor John M. Gregory ("Jno. M. Gregory").

- October 4, 1843 commission of Alexander Bell as First Lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment of Cavalry, 16th Brigade, signed by Lieutenant Governor John M. Patton ("Jno. M. Patton").

- November 7, 1843 commission of Hiram Maniel as Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment of Artillery, 10th Brigade, signed by Governor James McDowell ("Ja: McDowell").

- June 22, 1846 commission of Michael Bradshaw as First Lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment of Artillery, 10th Brigade, signed by Lieutenant Governor John M. Patton.

- September 12, 1848 commission of John M. Kedm as First Lieutenant in the 148th Regiment of Infantry, 10th Brigade, signed by Lieutenant Governor John F. Wily ("Jno. F. Wily").

- December 14, 1850 commission of John A.F. Martin as Colonel of the 148th Regiment, 10th Brigade, signed by Governor John B. Floyd.

- (4) July 14, 1853 commissions for individuals of the 148th Regiment, 10th Brigade, each signed by Governor Joseph Johnson ("Jos. Johnson"). Includes appointments for one Jacob C. Bishop, William Snider, John Snider, and Edgar Trowbridge.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
