Jabotinsky Vladimir

Zionist Vladimir Jabotinsky Signed this Postcard with Sisters Bella and Nina Berligne, Each in Uniform, in Jaffa

Rare Photograph Signed “V. Jabotinsky” in Hebrew on verso. Silver gelatin print, postcard format, 5.25” x 3.25.” Jabotinsky is flanked by sisters Bella and Nina Berligne. Dated and signed “29/XI. 18 / Yaffa. / Bella” and signed “Nina.”

During World War I, Jabotinsky asked the British to establish a Jewish Legion which would fight alongside their troops against the Ottoman Empire which then controlled Palestine. With Joseph Trumpeldor, Jabotinski created the Zion Mule Corps of several hundred men, mostly Russians, who had settled in Egypt after being exiled from Palestine by the Ottomans (Turks). The Zion Mule Corps served with distinction at the Battle of Gallipoli but was then disbanded. In 1917, Jabotinsky succeeded in getting the government to establish three Jewish units in the British Army, the Jewish Legion. In 1918, Jabotinsky fought against the Turks in the Jordan Valley and was decorated for bravery. He is wearing his military uniform in this photograph. Bella and Nina Berligne are wearing armbands and hats, each displaying the Star of David. There does not seem to be much information on the Berligne sisters on the web. There is, however, a letter from Chaim Weizmann to Bella Berligne, June 20, 1920, in “The Letters and Papers of Chaim Weizmann” and there is a record of a Nina Berligne (1897-1963) buried in Tel-Aviv.
