The 56th Fighter Group, commanded by Hubert Zemke (1914-1994), was first stationed in England in 1942. Counting only air-to-air victories, the 56th produced an impressive 39 aces, 28 of whom are represented in this collection. During the month of October 1943 alone, "Zemke's Wolfpack" as they referred to themselves, claimed 39 German aircrafts for the loss of only one of their own. Indeed, they boasted more air-to-air kills than any other fighter group in the Eighth Air Force by the end of the war, and second overall in the European Theater.
