Ze'ev Jabotinsky Signed Hebrew Presentation Copy of "Selected Writings of Ze'ev Jabotinsky: Diaspora and Assimilation"

A presentation copy of Ze'ev Jabotinsky (1880-1940), "Ketavim Nivkharim Kerekh rishon Gola veHitbolelut (ve-hitbolelut)" [trans: "Selected Writings of Ze'ev Jabotinsky: Diaspora and Assimilation"](Tel Aviv, Palestine: S.D. Saltzman, 1936), in Hebrew, signed, inscribed, and dated by the author on one of the front pastedown endpapers. The translated inscription has been paraphrased by a former collector in pencil on the frontmost endpaper as: "Ze'ev Jabotinsky to Moshe Herzog, Vilna, 1937." Jabotinsky's signature in Hebrew has been verified. The hardcover book with silver-embossed blue cloth boards features a frontispiece photograph of the author with its original tissue guard. Expected wear including minor separation at the spine joints. Scattered toning, foxing, and minor water stains primarily affecting the page edges and front and back endpapers, with mostly clean inner pages. 340pp. 7" x 9.675" x 1.25."

Zionist activist Ze'ev Jabotinsky visited Vilna (Vilnius, present day Lithuania) seven times between 1930-1939, often staying with associates from the Revisionist Youth Movement. Revisionist Zionists like Jabotinsky promoted the idea of maximal territorial expansion for Jews in modern day Israel, with living space extending on both sides of the Jordan River. There is a digital record kept in the archives of the Jabotinsky Institute in Israel listing one Moshe Herzog as serving on the Central Committee of Hatzohar of Vilna; this was the local chapter of a well-known Revisionist Zionist organization in the city. This Moshe Herzog was quite probably the dedicatee of Jabotinsky's book.

The subject of Jabotinsky's book was finding a place for Jews in the modern world. Jabotinsky held some very interesting views on Zionism which historian Ari Shilon explored in an essay published in "Mosaic" magazine in August 2021. Summing up Jabotinsky's beliefs, Shilon wrote in part: "Jabotinsky belonged to a broader movement known as 'synthetic Zionism,' whose members convened in 1906 in Helsinki and issued a call for collective rights for Jews in the Diaspora, in parallel to settlement in the Land of Israel and political Zionist action. While some Zionists saw any effort to aid the Diaspora as a distraction from the central goal, or saw any improvement of diasporic circumstances as discouraging aliyah, he saw no contradiction between strengthening national feeling among Diaspora Jews and the drive to settle in the Land of Israel."
