Zane Grey Archive, 4 Pcs, Incl. SP, AL & Signed Envelope

An archive of autographed and printed materials relating to American Western author Pearl Zane Grey (1872-1939), ca. 1910-1930, including: a 1p autograph letter with its original transmittal envelope, signed by Grey when addressing it to "Mrs. Zane Grey"; a vintage photograph signed by Grey as "Zane Grey"; and a printed Harper & Brothers brochure "Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Association of Zane Grey and Harper & Brothers, 1910-1930." Expected wear commensurate with age, else near fine. The photograph measures 6.375" x 8.5." Provenance material includes a former catalog description and translucent sleeves from R.M. Smythe & Co. and Spink Smythe, ca. 2008-2013.

The archive includes:

1.-2. A 1p autograph letter by Grey, unsigned. Undated except for "Thursday," but the postmark suggests ca. April 22, 191[?]. N.p. but probably Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania based on the same postmark. The letter on blue-lined stationery is accompanied by its original transmittal envelope signed by Grey as "Mrs. Zane Grey / 101 South St. / Middletown / NY." Expected wear including flattened folds. The canceled and postmarked envelope is letter-opened at top. Grey wrote sarcastically to his wife, Lina "Dolly" Grey (1881-1957), about shades and window treatments she had ordered, in part: "You did a fine job with those shades…Now they will have to be sent back. If we had got them from Macy's the trouble would have been averted. This is exactly what I expected…"

3. A vintage photograph of Zane Grey signed by him as "Zane Grey" in purple ink near bottom center. The black and white semi-matte photograph does not have any distinguishing studio marks. A few scattered discolored spots verso, else near fine. 6.375" x 8.5."

4. A printed promotional booklet, ca. 1930, entitled "Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Association of Zane Grey and Harper & Brothers, 1910-1930," in which the publisher announces the imminent publication of the latest Grey adventure, "The Shepard of Guadeloupe." Of especial interest is Harper's assertion that Grey's audience includes half the population of the United States, or over 50 million people! On golden rod colored paper. Near pristine. 4.25" x 5.5."

Zane Grey is most famous for his “Riders of the Purple Sage” (1912), a historical novel about late-nineteenth-century Mormons. This, along with countless magazine serials exploring the Western genre, made Grey one of the first millionaire authors. Grey was known for his adventures, but he also produced over 90 other works published during his lifetime and posthumously covering topics like hunting, fishing, and baseball.
