Zachary Taylor Signed Black Hawk War-era Receipt, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Graded Mint 9

A paper fragment signed by future 12th U.S. President Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) as "Z. Taylor: Col. / Comdg" in his role as commander of "Fort Crawford, M.T." (modern-day Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, formerly part of Michigan Territory) on June 30, 1833. Also countersigned by J.M.W. Stockton, Quartermaster of Fort Crawford. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded Mint 9. Expected weathering including light toning, folds, and wrinkles, else very good to near fine. Laid on a slightly larger piece of paper measuring 7.675" x 4.375." The slab measures 10" x 6.75."

The manuscript document inscribed in a secretarial hand represents a "Return for extra whiskey for Men on extra duty and Prisoners on Fatigue at Fort Crawford M.T. June 30 1833…The Asst Comg of Sub will issue agreeable to the above return." Seven men consumed seven gills of whiskey over the course of one day; one gill was equal to a quarter pint, or about four ounces.

Zachary Taylor served as a career military officer, participating in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Mexican-American War. He commanded Fort Crawford, an important outpost on the upper Mississippi River in modern-day southwestern Wisconsin, after 1829, and was appointed Colonel of the 1st Infantry Regiment in April 1832 on the eve of the Black Hawk War (April - August 1832). Taylor served under General Henry Atkinson during the summer of 1832 in maneuvers against Chief Black Hawk and his Sauk, Fox, and Kickapoo confederacy, and would oversee the imprisonment of the chief and other indigenous leaders following the bloody Battle of Bad Axe in August 1832. Zachary Taylor served as president between March 1849 and his death mid-term in July 1850.
