Rutledge, Edward (1749-1800) Three months before Edward Rutledge, at 26 the youngest Signer of the Declaration of Independence, was captured and imprisoned by the British, with South Carolina Signers Heyward and Middleton, he sends his servant to a neighbor to get his horse

Autograph Note Signed "Edwd. Rutledge," 1 page, 6.25" x 3". [South Carolina], February 16,1780. Expertly silked for preservation. Light soiling. Unknown recipient. Very Good condition.

In full, "Be pleased to let my Servant have my Horse. - Hble Servt. Edwd. Rutledge Feb: 16: 1780."

On May 12, 1780, three months after writing and signing the note here offered, the day American Gen. Benjamin Lincoln surrendered his forces to the British ending the Battle of Charleston, Edward Rutledge and fellow South Carolina Signers of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Heyward, Jr. and Arthur Middleton, were captured and held in a prison off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida, for 11 months, and were released in a prisoner exchange in July, 1781.
