Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson

Young Stonewall Jackson CDV After Brady As Confederate General, Remarkable!
CDV

A Brady carte de visite depicting Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) as a young man in his mid-20s, based on a daguerreotype of Jackson taken in 1851, when he was transitioning from U.S. Army service into a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute. During the Civil War, Brady took this same 1851 daguerreotype and retouched it to show Jackson as a 2-star Confederate general. N.d. but likely produced after Jackson's death in ca. 1864. New York, New York. The photograph shows a nearly clean-shaven Jackson, with generous muttonchops but lacking his signature beard, wearing a Confederate officer's uniform - truly a head-spinning artistic exercise to combine two distinct historical periods in one image! The sepia-colored albumen photograph is laid down on a gold-trimmed mount with rounded edges. The elegant backstamp verso is printed in part: "Brady's / National Photographic / Galleries / No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington D.C. / & Broadway & Tenth Street, / New York." Expected wear including even toning. The image is reversed on front compared to back. Pencil-inscribed by a former collector verso. Negligible scuffs and stubbed corners verso, else very good to near fine. 2.375" x 4".

Jackson was a Virginia-born West Point graduate whose first military service was in the Mexican War (1846-47), where he participated in the Siege of Veracruz, as well as the decisive Battles of Contreras, Chapultepec, and Mexico City. During this time, Jackson met future fellow Confederate General Robert E. Lee. From 1851-1861, Jackson served as Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Instructor of Artillery Tactics at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. Jackson resigned his teaching position to join the Confederate Army in 1861. He garnered his famous soubriquet "Stonewall" during the First Battle of Manassas, where he inspired Confederate resistance against Union troop advances. Jackson continued to perform brilliantly in military campaigns throughout 1862. The night of the Confederate victory at Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, Jackson was hit by friendly fire while meeting with a staff member. Gravely wounded, "Old Blue Light" died just a little over a week later of complications.
