Yitzhak Ben-Zvi Remembers Deceased Fellow Member of Hashomer & Haganah

Typed Letter Signed, "Y. Ben Zvi" as President of Israel, in Hebrew, one page, 8.5" X 11", February 9, 1958, Jerusalem, on State of Israel stationery, to Mr. Lubrani. Lightly soiled with folds, near fine condition. Accompanied by a full English translation.

In full, "Shalom, / I welcome your good idea to join efforts and create a literary memory in remembrance of the late Yaakov Pat, who died ahead of his time. / Yaakov Pat was my dear and close friend from back in the days of "Hashomer" and afterwards in the days that we served together in the first Hebrew regiments of the First World War and in the camps of Egypt, Raffa, Haifa and Zrifin in Israel. / I also carry in my heart the memory of our work together in the "Haganah" when our deceased friend Yaakov Pat held his dutiful position. / Regards, / Y. Ben Zvi (signed)".  Hashomer, meaning "The Guard", was a Jewish defense organization in Palestine organized in 1909 to provide guard services for Jewish settlements. In 1920 the organization was dissolved in favor of the Haganah, meaning "defense", an underground paramilitary organization formed during the British Mandate for Palestine to protect the Jewish Yishuv from Arab riots and violence. This organization later became the core of the Israel Defense Forces. Ben Zvi was active in these organizations and fondly remembers a deceased fellow member.
