Yalta Conference Photo Collection - Rare Russian Issued Photos, Some Never Published!
Archive
A collection of 14 Russian press photographs taken at the Yalta Conference in Geneva, 1945, showing American, British and Russian leaders who met to establish the reorganization of Europe following World War II. The photos, 8" x 10" matte, each bears a pencil notation describing the image and stamp on verso reading "Photo Museum of the Revolution CCCP." Please see image for an example. All exhibit significant curling and wrinkling as well as edge wear, and should be humidified to flatten.

While these photographs represent some of the better-known scenes from the Conference, many are candid shots of the more familiar images which did not make it into the press!

The Yalta Conference, held from February 4 to 11, 1945, was a significant diplomatic meeting between the leaders of the Allied powers during World War II: Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States, Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom, and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union. French leader Charles de Gaulle was conspicuously absent, causing much resentment on the part of the French.

The conference took place in the Crimean town of Yalta as the Allies anticipated victory over Nazi Germany. The primary objective was to discuss the reorganization of post-war Europe, address the governance of liberated territories, and secure Soviet assistance in the ongoing war against Japan.

One of the most notable outcomes was the agreement on the division of Germany into four occupation zones—controlled by the U.S., the U.K., the Soviet Union, and France—and the establishment of free elections in Eastern Europe, though this would later become a source of tension during the Cold War. On May 7, 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender at Allied headquarters in Reims, France, to take effect the following day. The Berlin Declaration of June 5, 1945, confirmed the division of Allied-occupied Germany into four occupation zones according to the Yalta Conference.

The Yalta Conference also laid the groundwork for the creation of the United Nations, aiming to maintain international peace and security after the war. However, despite promises made at Yalta, many of the agreements, particularly regarding Eastern Europe, were soon broken, leading to decades of Soviet domination over the region. Stalin's insistence on a Soviet sphere of influence and his reluctance to allow truly democratic elections in Eastern European countries, especially Poland, caused friction between the Allies and contributed to the emerging Cold War. Nevertheless, Yalta remains a pivotal moment in shaping the post-war order, influencing both the resolution of World War II and the geopolitical landscape that followed.
