The lot consists of:

1. A 1p typed letter signed by George C. Marshall (1880-1959), former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and then U.S. Secretary of State, as "GC Marshall" near center right. Dated March 23, 1948 on a single sheet of stationery with "Department of State / Washington" letterhead. Stamped and docketed. Expected wear including paper folds and moderate edge staining resulting from old adhesive. The center of the letter including Marshall's signature is not affected by the stains. Staple holes in the upper left corner, else good to very good. 8" x 10.5." U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall informed William L. Thorp, Assistant Secretary for Economic Affairs, that he had been selected to attend an upcoming meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

George C. Marshall is best known for serving as Army Chief of Staff between 1939-1945. During that time, Marshall expanded the armed forces in anticipation of World War II. In addition to serving as Secretary of State (1947-1949) and Secretary of Defense (1950-1951), Marshall also supervised the rollout of the ambitious European rebuilding plan that later bore his name. A career soldier, Marshall saw action in every major international conflict between the Philippine-American War to the Korean War.

2. A Late City Edition issue of "The New York Times," Vol. XCII, No. 31,204, dated July 1, 1943. Expected light surface wear including isolated edge toning, a chipped edge to the back page, and loose threads and perforation affecting the binding, else very good. 38pp. 16.5" x 22.5."

The July 1, 1943 issue of "The New York Times" is headlined "M'Arthur Starts Allied Offensive in Pacific; New Guinea Isles Won, Landings in Solomons; Churchill Promises Blows in Europe by Fall." The cover story referred to recent Allied incursions into the Japanese-occupied islands of Rendova and New Georgia Islands. General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964), then Supreme Allied Commander in the South West Pacific Area, spearheaded the military efforts of Operation Cartwheel. Other topics reported on included Winston Churchill; U.S. war debt; Vice President Henry A. Wallace's feud with Commerce Secretary Jesse Jones; and domestic food shortages. The paper also features many fabulous period advertisements, including wedding apparel for "furlough brides."
