WWI Liberty Bond Drive Propaganda Poster: "My Daddy Bought Me a Government Bond… Did Yours?"
Poster

A color offset lithograph, being a superb example of an American World War I propaganda poster: "My Daddy Bought Me a Government Bond / of the / Third Liberty Loan / Did Yours?" N.d. but ca. 1917-1918. New York, New York. The poster depicts a rosy-cheeked girl in a white pinafore with blond ringlets and an enormous pink hair ribbon lovingly clutching a war bond. Printed by the United States Printing & Lithograph Co., New York, its oval cartouche appearing at lower right. "11-A" is printed in the lower left corner. Expected wear and weathering commensurate with heavy use and age, including toning, isolated foxing, and edge darkening. Minor to moderate water stains mostly affecting the top half. Minor chipped edges/closed tears mostly affecting the top and right edge. Else very good and in vibrant color! Would look lovely framed and displayed. Currently furled. Overall unrolled size 20" x 30."

The "My Daddy" poster was issued by the U.S. Treasury Department's Publicity Bureau to drum up support of its latest large-scale war bond drive, the Third Liberty Loan, enacted April 5, 1918. The Third Liberty Loan promised a 4.5% interest rate to U.S. citizens pledging up to $3 billion to the U.S. government, the payout redeemable in 1928. It followed two prior war bond drives, the first Liberty Loan drive (April 1917) and the Second Liberty Loan drive (October 1917), and it would not be the last: the U.S. had a final Fourth Liberty Loan drive in September 1918, just two months before Armistice. The war bonds financed America's gargantuan war machine, specifically military and medical supplies.

Many of these Liberty Loan posters featured nostalgic and sentimental representations of children and women, and were appropriately peddled by Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The United States Printing & Lithograph Co. produced many other wartime propaganda posters, including the famous "Joan of Arc Saved France."
