Rickenbacker Eddie

WWI Flying Ace Eddie Rickenbacker Signed Photo and Business Card

8" x 10" glossy black and white photograph of celebrated World War I fighter pilot Edward V. Rickenbacker (1900-1973), signed, inscribed, and dedicated by him as "With my best wishes / To Alexander F. Nahas / Capt Eddie Rickenbacker 1918 / 1973." Expected light superficial wear, else near fine. Accompanied by the aviator's business card listing his New York City address. With minor edge burn, else near fine.

The photograph shows Captain Eddie V. Rickenbacker posing next to a Nieuport 28 type biplane similar to the machines he operated over France and Flanders. After enlisting in 1917, Rickenbacker was assigned to the 94th Air Squadron, also known as the "Hat-in-the-Ring" squadron. The squadron's insignia, an Uncle Sam hat and hoop, can clearly be seen painted on the plane's fuselage in the picture. Rickenbacker logged in over 300 combat hours, destroying 26 verified enemy aircraft ranging from fighter planes to observation balloons. His record was unbroken until World War II.

A child of Swiss-German immigrants, Rickenbacker had changed the spelling of his last name to avoid anti-German sentiment during World War I. The flying ace, automotive designer, and race car driver later became an airline executive with Eastern Air Lines. As we know from his business card, Rickenbacker's company office was located on the 23rd floor of 45 Rockefeller Plaza.

Alexander F. Nahas (1920-2016) was born in Marseilles to a missionary family. He later lived in Danbury, Connecticut and became a merchant marine and government bureaucrat.
