Most of the photographs have been adhered to the album pages, but a few have come loose and others have been added to the album with no adherence. Two or three images are also dated 1915.

When the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917, Florida was a sparsely populated state. Its abundance of open, arable land and year-round warm climate made the state an ideal location for military training and technological development. That year, the Army announced its intention of establishing a series of camps to train prospective pilots, and a survey crew was sent to Southwest Florida to scout suitable sites. As well, in Pensacola, Key West, and Miami, aviation programs were initiated by the United States Navy. When soldiers started returning home in late 1918 and early 1919, widespread influenza outbreaks that began in 1918 would keep the Red Cross and other Florida volunteers occupied well past the war’s end.
