Description:

Wright Bros. Grouping of Personally Owned Medals, An Orville ANS, Original Photographs and Other Related Materials Collected by Their Nephew Horace Wright. An Incredible Collection!

A fantastic collection of items from the Wright brothers personal archives collected by Horace Wright, the famous brothers nephew and his wife Sue. The incredible collection includes original photographs, personally owned medals, and Orville Wright note and more! The 1909 medal has never been cleaned and retains its original patina. The Orville Wright note has heavy wear and is expertly repaired. Photo of Orville and Col. Deeds has soiling at the margins. Edison Institute book has a sunned spine, with splits to the fabric. Remaining items are near fine.

Highlights include:

Wright Brothers Personally Owned Medal made for the occasion of the Wright Brothers Home Celebration in Dayton, Ohio on June 17 and 18, 1909. The medal measures 1.25" in diameter and features profile portraits of Wilbur and Orville on the front, beneath their first airplane. The verso has their plane in flight over a mountain scape with birds. The original ribbon for this medal is present, though no longer attached. This is the only example of this medal we could locate, and it originally belonged to either Wilbur or Orville and was worn by one of them according to Dawn Dewey of the Wright Library who was contacted by a prior owner of the medal.

Orville Wright Autograph Note Signed with Initials. An advertisement torn from a magazine, 7.5" x 10.25"; no place, no date. The brief note reads: "Sue: You can get all you want. No excuse for Bus limping about any longer. O. W." "Bus" was Horace's nickname, and Sue was his wife.

Wright Brothers Stick Pin. Produced by M. C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio circa 1920s. The badge measures 1.2" x 1.75" and reads "Home of the Flying Machine / Dayton / Ohio," with a plane flying over a landscape.

1924 Aluminum Coin commemorating the Pulitzer Races held on October 2-3-4, 1924. One side of the coins features the Wright Brothers, labeling them "Pioneers" and the other side gives the name and dates of the races.

Fob Commemorating Charles Lindbergh's Flight Across the Atlantic. 1.25" x 1.5", circa 1927. The fob shows Lindbergh's plane with the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower on either side. According to family history, the fob was gifted to Orville. Lindbergh visited Orville in Dayton on June 22, 1927, one month after his historic flight across the Atlantic. Lindbergh wanted to pay his respects to Wright, who he considered the pioneer of flight.

Edison Institute Dedication of The Wright Brothers Home and Shop in Greenfield Village. Ex. Susan Wright. 9.25" 6.5", April 16, 1938, Dearborn Michigan with a sticker showing ownership belonging to Susan Wright, the wife of Horace. The second page features a photographic print of one of the most iconic images of all time, taken "from the original negative of the only picture taken of man's first flight" at Kitty Hawk, N.C on December 17, 1903.

There are also two medals produced by the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, and a decorative teaspoon commemorating Dayton, Ohio and the Wright Brothers. The medals likely date from the mid-20th Century and the spoon is engraved with the year 1923 and is marked Sterling.
