Wright Bros: Monoplane in Flight, An Incredible Silver Gelatin Photograph Taken at the Pau Aerodrome
Photograph
Original Silver Gelatin Print Photograph, Pau, France, ca. 1909, capturing a monoplane flying over a rural scene with ox-drawn carts laden with hay. The striking image, a blend of technological innovation and pastoral tradition, underscores the dramatic societal transition during the early 20th century as aviation emerged to redefine transportation and exploration. The composition juxtaposes the revolutionary achievement of powered flight against the timeless simplicity of agrarian life, making it a poignant visual narrative of its time. Mounted on period card stock with the embossed mark of "Callizo Pau" in the lower right corner. Some signs of aging, else fine, a truly striking image. The photo measures 4.75" x 6.675" and is mounted to an overall size of 9" x 7.25."

The only comparable image we could find sold in 2013 at Bonhams for $2,250. We believe this example far surpasses it in quality and presentation.

In December of 1909, Pau, France, was at the forefront of aviation history as a hub for early flight training and demonstrations. The Wright brothers, having established their flight school at the Pont-Long Aerodrome earlier that year, were training some of the world's first pilots. This included military aviators, as Pau had become a center for advancing aviation technology and preparing pilots for the rapidly growing field of aviation.

Wilbur Wright was present in Pau during this time, teaching flight techniques and conducting public demonstrations of the Wright Flyer. These sessions attracted significant attention from the media, military officials, and European aristocrats, all eager to witness and learn from the pioneers of powered flight. The aerodrome at Pau became a critical site for both technological innovation and the development of aviation as a practical tool for reconnaissance and transportation.
