Letter

Confederate soldier's letter by Lorraine W. Griffin of the North Carolina 16th Infantry with Battle of Gettysburg content. 2pp, 8" x 11.625"; Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Virginia; July 17, 1863. Griffin, a private in Company "D" of the 16th NC Infantry, writes home to his family giving an account of the casualties in his Company at Gettysburg. He adds, "General Lee is on this side of the Potomac with his men." The letter has been laminated, but remains attractive; with bold ink and a spot of loss at a fold intersection affecting a single word on each page. A scarce CSA account of Gettysburg casualties by a soldier wounded in action there.

Griffin writes that he is "in a low state of helth and giting worse. I am porer then you ever saw me. Cant eat any thang but hope to git better the I have but little hope of it know tho i may git beter before long…I am very tired of this place..."

He devotes the next portion to listing the casualties in his Regiment: "Jim I will tell you wha I her from the old 16 Regt Ramon Owens is camp winner wounded in the foot. Capt McKinney was wounded and taken prisoner. Liut King wounded in the knee Liut [Thomas J.] Thorn has lost his write arm and leg and is a prisoner [died a POW on July 30, 1863]. I reckon PL Mints was cut in two by abum John Ford is kill Pink[ney] Carpenter is kill by the same bom that kill Mints our men all was 13 kill and wounded…"

Lorraine W. Griffin enlisted on May 1, 1861. He was a 23-year-old farmer at the time. He survived his wounds and was promoted to sergeant on October 1, 1864. Griffin was paroled at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax.
