Description:

Woodrow Wilson TLS Re: "we should have a comprehensive programme and should carry it out in thorough-going fashion…"

A 1p typed letter signed by former 28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) as "Woodrow Wilson" at lower right. July 21, 1922. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked bifold stationery with Wilson's name and address as "2340 S Street N W / Woodrow Wilson / Washington D C" embossed at the letterhead. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds. The innermost and outermost pages are blank. Isolated adhesive tape remnants and partially erased pencil inscriptions by a former collector. Else near fine. 7" x 8.875."

Wilson's correspondent was Frank I. Cobb (1869-1923), a longtime close friend, Democratic Party supporter, and newspaper editor of "The New York World."

Wilson wrote in part:

"The idea of a joint resolution broached in your letter of July twentieth is entirely novel to me and I should not feel prepared to express a judgment about it without expert advice. Lets [sic] keep it for thorough examination after the autumn elections when we can consult impartial experts in international law like James Brown Scott. There will be much else to talk over also for we should have a comprehensive programme and should carry it out in thorough-going fashion…"

The exact subject which Wilson and Cobb are discussing is uncertain, but what is clearly demonstrated is Wilson's keen interest in both domestic and international current affairs some 16 months after leaving office. Wilson maintained his discretion and prudence even as a private citizen; he is reluctant to offer an opinion until after consulting "impartial experts."

James Brown Scott (1866-1943) was educated at Harvard University as well as in Germany and France. He became a practicing lawyer, law professor, and international law expert.
