1p typed, measuring 7" x 9", Washington, D.C., dated September 12, 1917. Signed "Woodrow Wilson" and addressed to Hon. Edward N. Hurley of the U.S. Shipping Board. Sent from the U.S.S. Mayflower, Wilson relays information from the Postmaster General to Hurley. Written on White House stationery, the letter has flattened mail folds and light uneven toning. Some small holes are present around the top edge. Stamped on the top right corner by the U.S. Shipping Board to show receipt on September 15, 1917. Boldly signed.

Reads in full:
"Here is a letter addressed to the Postmaster General which he was kind enough to hand me and I am sure that he will not object to my sending it to you. It seems to me to contain a matter which you will be very much interested to read, and it is possible that you will wish to have some correspondence with the writer. His attitude is certainly most interesting and serves to throw several rays of light in several directions."

After seeing battle in the Spanish American War and being used for special service in the Caribbean, the U.S.S. Mayflower acted as the presidential yacht under Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, and Coolidge. Two years before this letter was written in 1915, the Mayflower would act as the setting for Wilson's courtship of Edith Bolling Galt. The information from the Postmaster General that Wilson refers to may be in connection with the Espionage Act of 1917, which sought to intercept and prohibit enemy communications during wartime.
