Woodrow Wilson Photograph with Ty Cobb - His Biggest Fan!
Photograph
A super press image showing baseball legend Ty Cobb standing with President Woodrow Wilson. Measures 5.75" x 8.5" sepia, with backstamp of Underwood & Underwood, New York. Indelible ink notations on verso, as well as a square in black ink drawn on recto, likely indicating the area to crop for publication. Two pin holes at left edge, a crease to bottom right corner but generally very good.

The occasion of the duo's meeting is not immediately clear, but Cobb's admiration for the baseball-loving Wilson is. In a 1916 interview, Cobb stated: "Next to Hughie Jennings, manager of the Detroit team, I consider Woodrow Wilson the greatest American…My first ambition, of course, is to have the Tigers win the pennant, but next to that my most earnest desire is to see President Wilson re-elected…I am anxious to lead the American League in batting, but that looks like a tough race this year. However, I can lead the American League in coming out for Wilson."

28th President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) is remembered as baseball's biggest Presidential fan, and was the first President to attend a World Series game. Author Curt Smith in wrote in "The Presidents and the Pastime: The History of Baseball & the White House" that Wilson absorbed baseball more deeply than any White House occupant who preceded or succeeded him, an opinion that Washington Senators' owner Clark Griffith, premier Senators' first baseman Joe Judge and the peerless Ty Cobb all agreed with.

Ty Cobb (1886-1961) nicknamed "The Georgia Peach", was an American baseball player widely regarded as one of the game's greatest hitters. Spending his entire 24-season career with the Detroit Tigers, Cobb set numerous records, including a lifetime batting average of .366, which remains the highest in MLB history. Known for his fierce competitiveness, Cobb's aggressive playing style and spikes-first sliding technique earned him a reputation as one of the game's most intimidating and polarizing figures. Off the field, he was known for his charitable acts and for helping those in need. Ty Cobb's legacy as a baseball legend endures, and his impact on the game's history is unparalleled.
