Woodrow Wilson Fabulous Signed Photo With Original Transmittal TLS From Private Secretary Brother-in-Law

A Harris & Ewing silver gelatin photograph depicting 28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), signed and dated by him as "Woodrow Wilson / 1923" just outside the photo field in the lower right corner of the mat. The name of the photo studio, "© Harris & Ewing / Washington, D.C." is present in raised lettering in the lower left corner of the matte black and white photograph. Expected wear including minor silvering primarily found along the edges. Hinged at the top to its original Harris & Ewing mat. The front cover of the photo mat is detached but included, and shows minor toning and edge darkening. Else near fine. The actual size of the photo is 4.75" x 6.75" while the photo mat measures 7.625" x 9.5."

Also included with the photograph is the original transmittal documentation, a 1p typed letter signed by John Randolph Bolling (1876-1951), Woodrow Wilson's brother-in-law (the younger brother of second wife Edith Bolling Galt Wilson), who served as Wilson's private secretary after the former's presidential term ended. April 17, 1923. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked stationery with the address of the Wilsons' home at 2340 S Street, N.W. [Washington, D.C.] embossed at the letterhead. Bolling's letter to autograph collector Charles H. Dabbs reads in part: "Mr. Wilson requests me to return herewith the photograph sent him with your letter of the 13th inst., together with another one--a pose which he likes better--containing his autograph…" Even toning and isolated foxing, else near fine. 7" x 9.5."

The Wilsons moved into a private residence at 2340 S Street, N.W. in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, D.C. in March 1921. Woodrow, Edith, and John Randolph Bolling lived together in the mansion. Woodrow Wilson lived there until his death in February 1924. Edith Wilson stayed on in the house until her death in December 1961. John Randolph Bolling continued his secretarial duties for the former First Lady after Woodrow's death.

George W. Harris (died 1964) and Martha Ewing opened their photo studio in Washington, D.C. in 1905. The firm was celebrated for its 1908 "Evolution of a Smile" photo series of Republican presidential nominee William H. Taft. It reached its peak in the 1930s, managing over 100 employees, five studios, and a news service.
