Woodrow Wilson as President, Signed Letter Mourning the Death of his Wife

Bi-fold typed letter signed on Presidential White House letterhead, 7" x 8.75." Dated "August 15, 1914" and signed by Woodrow Wilson as "Woodrow Wilson." Typed to recto of first page, balance of pages blank. The type ink bled to the verso of the page, small adhesive remnants along edge of last page. Expect single mailing fold.

A warm letter by Wilson who was touched and comforted by a received telegram from a friend offering sympathy after the passing of Ellen, Wilson's wife of 30 years. The two had three children together. Wilson would later remarry while still in office. "I want you to know how real a comfort it was to me to get your telegram of sympathy. It is very delightful to feel the warm touch of a friend's hand at such a time and your telegram has served to give me strength and courage … "

Wilson entered office in March of 2013, and even with the health issues that surrounded his wife managed to achieve significant progressive reform. Congress passed the Underwood-Simmons Act, which reduced the tariff on imports and imposed a new federal income tax. It also passed legislation establishing the Federal Reserve (which provides a system for regulating the nation’s banks, credit and money supply) and the Federal Trade Commission (which investigates and prohibits unfair business practices). Other accomplishments of his first term included child labor laws, an eight-hour day for railroad workers and government loans to farmers.

A lovely warm letter by this President.
