Description:

Paterson William

Constitution Signer Paterson; and General Washington's Intelligence Officer Howell, Signed Document 1798

Single page partially printed document signed by two important Revolutionaries. Executed on laid paper, 12.5" x 8.5," the document is dated "September 28, 1798." Signed by Constitution signer, William Paterson as "Wm. Paterson," in addition to Richard Howell as "Rd. Howell," General Washington's direct report on British Intel. The document is slightly trimmed along the top edge (not affecting the signatures) and has been adhered to a supportive backing. The paper is lightly toned commensurate with age. Embossed seal to upper left corner. Ex. Charles Forbes, having been off market for over 60 years. In over 80 years at auction we can only locate 5 individual examples of Paterson having been sold and at an average of over $3600! The last example to sell was 5 years ago. We now think Paterson is as rare as Jacob Broom or Abraham Baldwin.

A handsome document appointing Martha Conoley of Gloucester County to succeed John West as Executor of the estate of William Conoley. An extraordinary document signed by two important revolutionaries. William Paterson who signed as a justice of the Supreme Court, and Richard Howell as Governor of New Jersey. However both led incredible lives during the revolutionary period.

William Paterson is credited as one of the signers of the Constitution. At the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia he came up with the idea about unicameral law body, with similar representation from every State. This proposal was a New Jersey plan. There was however a great compromise based on his argument for an equal system of authority. That notwithstanding, the Constitution got signed. This happened after the Senate and the house or representatives complied to have equal representation for every State.

Richard Bond Howell played a pivotal role during the American Revolution and the birth of a new nation. He was an intelligence officer entrusted by General Washington to gather vital British troop movement information and report directly to General Washington. Richard Howell served as Brigade Major in General Maxwell's NJ Brigade at various skirmishes throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey and the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth Courthouse. He was a statesman and was elected as one of two delegates from Gloucester county New Jersey to ratify the United States Constitution.

A superb document with two important signatories from the American Revolution and the birth of a new nation.
